Better': Jamie Carragher says 'amazing' Newcastle man has been more impressive than Arsenal man in 2022
Jamie Carragher believes Eddie Howe is the manager of the year in the Premier League for 2022, ahead of the likes of Mikel Arteta.
The Gunners coach has been in the headlines all year after overseeing a transformation at Arsenal that has seen them climb to the top of the Premier League. A number of new signings have helped Arteta, with an ethos around signing younger hungry players key to their success.
However, writing in his column for The Telegraph today, former Liverpool man Carragher believes the only man who can be named manager of the year for 2022 is Newcastle’s Eddie Howe.
Carragher lauds the achievements of Howe in the article, insisting that not another manager in the league would have been able to do what Howe has done at Newcastle. And in that, he includes both Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola.
Howe has led the Toon into the top four and there is now a very realistic chance they make it. Their win over Leicester on Boxing Day cemented their status as contenders further.
Of course, Arsenal fans will be happy to let Howe take the plaudits. After all, their side is in line to win the Premier League title as it stands.
TBR’s View: Howe and Arteta both brilliant young managers
Arteta and Howe deserve equal praise really but it is interesting what Carragher points out here. So much of the success Howe has had is down to coaching and man management. And in fairness, that’s what Arteta’s been praised for at Arsenal as well.
The manager of the year talk will always be subjective. But both Arteta and Howe are rightfully mentioned and come the end of the season, both will be in with a shout of the yearly award.
Certainly, if Howe – who Fabian Schar dubbed ‘amazing‘ for his role at the club – takes Newcastle into the Champions League, then there’ll be a strong argument for his case.
