Jamie Carragher praises Alexandre Lacazette for Arsenal display against Villa

Sky Sports pundit and former Liverpool defender, Jamie Carragher, was full of praise for Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette after the Gunners saw off Aston Villa 3-1 last night.

The experienced French striker was given a rare start in behind Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the Arsenal attack. And it paid off for Mikel Arteta, who saw Lacazette win a penalty after being brought down by Matt Targett.

With Emile Smith Rowe and Bukayo Saka buzzing about around him, Lacazette really seemed to find his place last night. Indeed, he impressed those watching on too, as Carragher praised him following the game.

Speaking to Sky Sports alongside Gary Neville, Carragher insisted Lacazette deserved praised after being previously questioned.

What Has Gone RIGHT At West Ham United?

“I thought they (Arsenal) were brilliant, I really did. I enjoyed watching them off the ball as much as on it,” Carragher said live on air.

“I think even players we’ve been critical of at times last season like Aubameyang and Lacazette. Are they giving 100 percent? Are they working for the team? They were brilliant tonight. I always thought can they play together as a two, Lacazette in the number ten position was outstanding as well.”

Lacazette is into the final year of his contract at the club. Nothing has been agreed as yet, and he is expected to leave unless something changes.

TBR’s View: Arsenal need more of this from Lacazette

Carragher is right to have questioned the Frenchman last season. At times, he hasn’t delivered at all. Especially given the money Arsenal have invested into him.

But he showed how effective he can be last night. His all around game was excellent and his work rate also matched his quality. That, as Carragher and Neville pointed out, is crucial.

If he continues to perform like this, then the powers that be at Arsenal might think again about a new contract.
