Carragher is right about Liverpool’s failure to adequately replace Coutinho

Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher wants his former club to finally replace former playmaker Philippe Coutinho this summer, according to the Daily Mirror.

Carragher watched the Reds struggle to back down a bitter rival on their own patch for the second week running on Sunday.

The 0-0 stalemate versus Everton at Goodison Park came on the back of another goalless draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford the Sunday previous.

And after a lack of subtlety and variety in the attack cost Liverpool dear for the second week running, Carragher called on Jurgen Klopp to replace Coutinho in the third window after the Brazilian’s departure to join Barcelona.

When asked whether Liverpool’s midfield have a creativity problem, Carragher said: “Yes, in terms of the make-up of the midfield three but it isn’t just a problem now, I think that was even a problem if you go back to the end of last season when Liverpool were doing so well in the Champions League.

“There were certain games, like the final of the Champions League, where you thought that they lacked just one player. They lost Coutinho last January and they never replaced him. Even if Liverpool win the league, it is a position that Liverpool need to try and fill.”

Coutinho offers an alternative to Liverpool’s blood and thunder approach; a player who is capable of picking a lock as opposed to smashing the door down, and Carragher is right when he says the Reds miss him in certain matches.
