Carragher expects Arsenal to miss out on the top four because of their away form

Arsenal jumped into third place in the Premier League last night with a 2-0 victory over Newcastle United but Jamie Carragher does not expect them to finish the season in the top four.

Speaking on Monday Night Football, 1st April, 10:30pm, Carragher said that with five of Arsenal’s seven remaining matches coming away from the Emirates Stadium, he expects that to count against Unai Emery’s side.

He said: “If I had to call it now (the top four race), I’d go for Tottenham and Manchester United. That away form… they’re not playing the top six sides but they’ve got away games – Everton, Watford, Wolves, Leicester – they’re those ones where even a draw there isn’t a good result at this stage.”

Arsenal are still yet to keep a clean sheet away from home this season, from 14 matches, conceding 27 goals on the road compared to just 12 at home.

They’ve picked up just 19 points from those away assignments, having won just five times away from the Emirates Stadium this season.

So with five away games left, they’d have to double their tally of away victories this season to keep their top four destiny in their own hands, otherwise, they’re handing chances to their rivals to step in.

And although Arsenal’s away form has improved since Arsene Wenger’s departure, Carragher is right to fear that it might not be enough with some tricky away trips to come.
