Former Premier League boss Carlos Carvalhal is keen to discuss the vacancy at Celtic, according to reports in The Scottish Sun.

The Portuguese boss is keen to return to management; with Britain his preferred destination following spells with Sheffield Wednesday and Swansea City.

Neil Lennon is currently overseeing managerial duties at Celtic Park, but Sunday’s 2-0 reverse to fierce rivals Rangers might hamper his chances of the permanent gig.

Carvalhal twice led Wednesday to the Championship play-offs. His team were defeated by Hull in the final one year, before crashing out to Huddersfield Town the following season.

His spell with Swansea did eventually lead to relegation. Carvalhal did oversee memorable wins over Arsenal and Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool during his time in charge, however.

The Hoops won’t make any decision regarding their permanent manager until the end of the campaign. Carvalhal’s representatives have apparently been in touch with the club to confirm his interest in discussing the role.

TBR Verdict

Carvalhal is certainly one of the better names that have been linked to the Celtic vacancy in recent weeks. His extensive managerial record will do him no harm at all in the quest to take the mantle.

The 53-year-old boasts experience of managing all over Europe, including Britain. The fact he has managed in European competition also makes him a decent appointment for Celtic.

He was an interesting character during his time managing Wednesday and Swansea. Known for his amusing press conferences, Carvalhal adhered himself to supporters of both clubs with some pretty decent football.

He very nearly kept Swansea in the top-flight, whilst he led an unfancied Wednesday to the play-offs twice.

It remains to be seen if Celtic will opt for Carvalhal, but it is fair to say that the Hoops could do an awful lot worse than appoint him into the role ahead of next season.
