Carlo Ancelotti confirms planned contract talks with Everton’s Leighton Baines
Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed that the Merseyside club plan to hold talks with their defender Leighton Baines over a new deal.
The veteran defender’s current contract at Goodison Park expires at the end of the season and as it stands he will bring a 13-year stay with the Toffees to an end.
He’s played just six senior games this season as second fiddle to first-choice left-back Lucas Digne, but has majorly impressed with back-to-back starts in the Premier League.
The 35-year-old may be winding down towards the end of his career, but he has proven recently that he can still play an energetic role at full-back and cut it in the top-flight.
Ancelotti has explained that Everton plan to try secure the future of the fan favourite beyond the summer, but is unsure on the player’s plans yet.
“Our idea, the idea of the Club, is, ‘Don’t stop playing, stay with us for the next year’,” Ancelotti told the club’s official website.
“We would like to keep him and are going to talk with him. It would be good for us if he can stay. Physically, he has no problem.
“I think he wants to continue but it is his decision. He has experience and even if he does not play frequently he is able to come in and manage the game.”
TBR’s View – Everton fans should be elated
Everton want to be moving up the table with top-class manager Ancelotti at the helm and that means building on a decent squad going into next year.
But fans should be over the moon if they keep Baines on the books next season, as he’s someone that knows the club inside out and his experience within the dressing room must be vital.
The English left-back has been arguably the club’s best player during the previous decade and while he’s still capable he should be playing a role in the Everton squad.
