Carlo Ancelotti has given a transfer update on Friday regarding what Everton are looking to do in the remainder of the transfer window, as he was asked about the two specific positions of goalkeeper and defence.
The Toffees manager confirmed in his press conference (Liverpool Echo) that they are looking to bring in a centre-back if there is a chance to do so.
He also added that he has full belief in his current number one Jordan Pickford and that the Merseyside club are not looking to sign a new goalkeeper.
Everton have been linked with Manchester United goalkeeper (Mirror) and Valencia goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen (Marca) recently, but Ancelotti’s comments seem to have squashed those rumours and any chance of a new shot-stopper arriving.
But Ancelotti’s team are on the search for a new centre-back, which is why Everton’s reported interest (Mundo Deportivo) in signing Athletic Bilbao centre-back Unai Nunez on loan seems more believable.
Ancelotti has publicly given his support for under-fire goalkeeper Pickford and the player should take big confidence from the fact the Everton manager has categorically ruled out signing anyone else in his position.
The 26-year-old was brilliant at the beginning of the season in a win over Tottenham and is the England number one capable of top-class performance, but he also has an individual error in him and fans are growing frustrated with the lapses of concentration that he show.
Everton look like a side based on their early-season form that can look up the table to the European positions and they will need their goalkeeper on top form if they are to do that.
