Carlo Ancelotti claims Everton will look to improve quality in order to play ‘more attractive football’

Everton will target players who will help the Blues improve their quality in this summer’s transfer window, according to boss Carlo Ancelotti.

Speaking prior to this weekend’s clash against West Ham United, the Italian manager claimed that after strengthening the midfield’s ‘energy’, it’s time to focus on quality in the final third.

The Goodison Park outfit embarked on a sensational summer window last year as the clubs welcome a trio of midfield signings. The likes of Abdoulaye Doucoure, James Rodriguez, and Allan all joined from Watford, Real Madrid, and Napoli respectively.

It’s seemed to have the desired effect with the team already having accumulated three more points after 34 Premier League games than they managed in the whole of last campaign.

When talking about the need for attack-minded signings, Ancelotti said: “Oh, we have weaknesses and we have quality, and I think that the speed and energy is really important in modern football, but not the most important part, of course. The last time [summer transfer window] we had to try and improve the energy in midfield, we signed players who put more energy in midfield, so [this time] we need to improve some positions on the pitch to try and play more attractive football.”

“It is a step we have to use, I think the fact that the attitude was good and the spirit was good, it is a step to try and improve the quality and play more attractive football.”

There can be many interpretations of Ancelotti’s claims of ‘attractive’ football, but, the lack of goals across the whole season has been quite stark especially given the quality Everton possesses in both attack and midfield.

However, it seems a case of if Dominic Calvert-Lewin isn’t firing, the rest of the players fail to step up. The England international has bagged 15 league goals this year with Gylfi Sigurdsson, Richarlison, and Rodriguez all stuck on six in joint-second. Thereafter the next highest goalscorer has managed just three.

Overall, the club has scored just 45 goals this campaign, the least amount of goals of any side in the top 11 teams in the top-flight. And when you consider the number of goals the northwest outfit has shipped, it makes the lack of attacking threat all the more worrying.

Quality is needed in the final third for Everton, who will be looking to build on a promising season that has seen them already surpass last season’s points tally. Pressure needs to be taken off Calvert-Lewin and spread throughout the team if the club wants to make that step up to the next level.
