Carles Gil explains how Aston Villa stint went from 'heaven to hell'

Former Aston Villa winger Carles Gil has described how his time at Aston Villa quickly went from ’heaven to hell’ under the management of Tim Sherwood.

It was Paul Lambert who brought the exciting Spaniard to Villa Park in January 2015 for a reported (BBC) £3.2 million.

Lambert was very excited about the move. As he was quoted by the BBC, Lambert predicted that the Aston Villa ‘crowd will love him’ and that the ‘very gifted’ Spaniard would ‘excite people’.

The early signs were good. Gil came straight into the Aston Villa side but could reverse their recent bad run of form. That poor form saw Lambert sacked just one month after signing Gil and Tim Sherwood replaced him.

Speaking to SuperDeporte this week, Gil explained how his time at Aston Villa quickly turned sour.

“It was the opposite of what usually happens because it is difficult to adapt to England. As soon as I arrived my first two months were of a very high level but the results of the team did not accompany. There was a change of coach and it went from heaven to hell. From practically playing everything to playing forty minutes in three months.”

Sherwood actually did use Gil on multiple occasions throughout the 2015-16 season. The Spaniard got plenty of chances, as Aston Villa spiraled toward relegation.

However, despite his obvious talent, Gil never had a big impact at Villa Park and eventually left for Deportivo La Coruna and is now in the United States, playing under Bruce Arena at New England Revolution where he has had a decent start to life in Major League Soccer.

Hopefully, it can remain that way for this largely forgotten former Aston Villa man.
