Carl Jenkinson’s form since 2016 ACL injury should worry Celtic fans

Carl Jenkinson suffered a long-term knee injury during a loan spell.

Celtic need a new right-back and have looked at several options this summer. And the latest target to emerge is Arsenal’s Carl Jenkinson.

According to The Scottish Mail (via HITC), Celtic are interested in signing Jenkinson on loan. This would provide them with a short-term replacement for exit-bound defender Mikael Lustig.

Jenkinson has had an interesting career. He started out at Charlton Athletic before making his big move to boyhood club Arsenal. The once-capped England international was highly regarded, even when he was sent out on loan in the 2014/15 season.

West Ham signed local lad Jenkinson on loan in summer 2014 and he enjoyed a superb season. He signed a long-term Arsenal extension and returned on loan for the 2015/16 season.

But this is why Celtic fans need to be cautious of Jenkinson. During that second loan spell, Jenkinson injured his ACL. This happened in January 2016 and he was ruled out until late October 2016.

Since then, the 27-year-old has only played 13 games for the Gunners, as well as having an unsuccessful loan spell at Championship side Birmingham City, where he played nine times.

Jenkinson has been plagued with all sorts of injuries since that long-term blow in January 2016. And with just 22 games under his belt in nearly three years, this means that Celtic are taking a gamble with the defender – even if it is just a loan.
