Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane has been praised by Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson, who believes the Spurs man “has started to do what Kevin De Bruyne does”.
Kane’s talents as a centre-forward are well known, but this season he’s been operating as a No. 10 as well, dropping deeper to get on the ball and create opportunities.
Jose Mourinho’s decision to utilise Kane in this manner has worked wonders, the 27-year-old registering 13 goals and 11 assists so far this term.
Kane’s contributions have helped Spurs climb to the top of the Premier League table and turn the Lilywhites into a force to be reckoned with.
And Merson has been left in awe of Kane’s performances, claiming his skill set is such that he’s now playing like the Manchester City midfielder.
“I just struggle with words to describe him,” he wrote on Sky Sports. “He is not far off the best player in the world.
“And this is the reason: you have got players like Ian Wright, Alan Shearer, Sergio Aguero, Robbie Fowler, Andy Cole, Les Ferdinand, Jamie Vardy. All top, top drawer centre-forwards.
“Harry Kane is one of them, and then Harry Kane goes and plays where Kevin De Bruyne plays, where Eric Cantona played, where Dennis Bergkamp played, and he does it just as well.
“There’s nobody in the world like him. There’s no other player in the world who can be as good as a No 9, and as good as a No 10. I don’t think there ever has.
“Lionel Messi cannot go up front, hold the ball up, bring people into play, and then score bundles of goals, and then go and play No 10 in the same game. He’s a No 10. Kane can do both.
“I cannot believe what I see with Kane. Some of the passes, crosses, they are Kevin De Bruyne! Harry Kane has started to do what Kevin De Bruyne does!”
It’s frightening to see just how Kane is developing under Mourinho – not only is his goal tally as good as ever, but his assist tally is also shooting right up, while his overall play is simply unbelievable.
Merson makes a good point in that the Spurs man’s skill set, not to mention his fitness and attitude, are worthy of him being deemed “not far off the best player in the world”, given he can do not just what the top strikers do, but also the best attacking midfielders.
