Jack Payne – Southend United

Jack Payne’s contract is set to expire this summer, with Southend United boss Phil Brown resigned to the fact that the 21-year-old attacking midfielder will be leaving Roots Hall. Payne, who has scored 6 goals in 34 appearances for the League 1 outfit this season, has been linked with a move to the John Smith’s Stadium in the local press, and although the Shrimpers will be due some compensation due to the player’s age, he fits the bill when it comes to Town’s recent recruitment policy; he’s cheap and has potential.

Would he make it in the first-team?

Payne is aggressive, quick, and defends from the front, all qualities that make him an ideal fit for Wagner’s brand of high-energy, high-pressing football. If Town sign Jamie Paterson from Nottingham Forest, Payne would make an ideal understudy in the Number 10 role; if not, then he could make a claim for a starting berth alongside the likes of Joe Lolley, Harry Bunn, and Rajiv van La Parra, all young players with something to prove.
