Andrew Shinnie:
Another player Rotherham have brought in is Andrew Shinnie on loan from Birmingham; one of Burke’s former clubs too. Shinnie has also had his playing time limited this season due to the good form of Jon Toral at Birmingham thus far and so a loan move always looked likely. This was confirmed when Diego Fabbrini’s arrival at the Blues paved the way for Shinnie to move to South Yorkshire and I am sure he can flourish there.
There are just a few doubts though. On his day, Shinnie can run a game in behind the opposition midfield but he can go missing in games too. In Rotherham’s current situation, they need fighters and players who can take games by the scruff of the neck. In a side playing well, I am sure that Shinnie could do this, but in a struggling team and with his confidence not at its highest, he could be a bit hit and miss.
He is also a player known for his decent build-up play but on the flip side, a lack of productivity. Just four goals and five assists in two and a half seasons in England doesn’t represent a good enough return for a player whose best position is behind the striker. However, there is no doubt that he can score goals. Just take a look at his record in Scotland with Inverness where he hit the back of the net on 19 occasions in just two campaigns with them before making the move to England.
What he will do is give it his all. He is looking to kick start his career again after so much was made of him up in Scotland. I believe that Shinnie will add more quality to the Rotherham United side but he needs playing time. He can’t just play ten minutes here and there and be expected to go and change a game.
