Mazzarri has work to do at Watford over the summer
Despite starting Monday evening just four points off West Brom in eighth place – able to go just one point adrift with a win over Liverpool – Watford didn’t show too much fight in their eventual loss.
Arguably lady luck wasn’t on their side when they did fathom a rare attack into the opposition half; a fierce Etienne Capoue drive from outside the area was palmed over well by Simon Mignolet yet not awarded a corner, whilst Troy Deeney was wrongly adjudged offside when well set inside the area.
Yet Watford have been largely unconvincing all season, and this has been evident in the inconsistency of their results – four wins in their last eleven league matches has continued to raise frustrations.
Although their league position at full-time shows the Hornets in 13th place, and within touching distance of the Baggies, they’re also just eight points ahead of the relegation spots with four games left.
The last time Watford beat Liverpool, back in December 2015, the Hornets were just a point outside of the Champions League spots, but 18 months on their progress has certainly stagnated somewhat.
With the Hornets able to finish anywhere between 8th and 16th before the end of the season, manager Walter Mazzarri will have his work cut out over the summer to improve the Watford squad for next year.
