‘Can kill careers’: Jurgen Klopp discusses whether any current Liverpool players could become coaches

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has been discussing the possibility of some of his current players potentially becoming coaches in the future.

The German was discussing the matter on the JD in the Duffle Bag podcast with Chuckie Online. The Liverpool boss seemed to suggest that whilst he was lucky in his career path, it does not mean he would recommend it for his players as paths can be very different.

“How I came into the job and my career so far, I could recommend it. Because it’s really nice. But you see all the other careers out there and all the other coaches they are not worse they were just not that lucky choosing the club, choosing the owners, choosing the CEOs. You cannot influence these things.

“If you are the best manager in the world, in the wrong club, it can kill careers. That’s how it is. So I am not sure if I would recommend a job but my job I could easily recommend because I was really lucky.”

There are plenty of players in the Liverpool squad at the moment who immediately spring to mind as potential coach material.

James Milner, Jordan Henderson, and Virgil van Dijk all have a football intelligence that would set them up for future coaching roles.

However, as Klopp proves, it is not always the best players that become the best coaches and plenty have found themselves in the wrong job far too soon into their managerial careers. Just look at Thierry Henry at Monaco or Gary Neville at Valencia.

Hopefully, however, with Klopp’s guidance, plenty of the current Liverpool first-team can go on to have successful coaching careers after their playing careers come to an end. It certainly sounds like the German would be ready to guide the way.
