Tottenham face a difficult home match against in-form Everton this weekend and it is crucial that they win to consolidate their position in the top four. Two of their top six rivals, Liverpool and Arsenal, are facing each other on Saturday, therefore at least one of them will drop points. That provides a good opportunity for Spurs to increase the gap between them and they must take it. Although Mauricio Pochettino’s men are in a good position in terms of gaining qualification for the Champions League, they were poor during the run-in last season and that will be on the minds of the supporters.
Harry Kane is showing no sign of slowing down and has been in superb form since the turn of the year. Only Lionel Messi (13) has scored more goals in the big five European leagues in 2017 than Kane, who has 12 in all competitions including three hat-tricks. When he is on form, he is unplayable and Tottenham will be hoping that he adds consistency to his game, as there have been several matches this calendar year that he has disappointed in. However, the fact that only the best player in the world has scored more goals than him since the turn of the year suggests that he full of confidence in front of goal.
There are many critics of Kane, but it is difficult to argue that he isn’t one of the best strikers in Europe. At the age of 23, he is closing in passing the 20-goal mark for the third successive season. Considering that would mean that he has achieved that in all three of his full seasons as a first team regular, he has to be seen as one of the best in his position. He will want to beat his last campaign’s tally of 25 and he should manage to do that.
The key to getting to best from their top scorer is the 3-4-3 formation. Tottenham have looked a lot more dangerous since the change to three at the back, as it has freed up Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen, both of whom have improved. Moreover, Kyle Walker is getting forward with more regularity and he has the ability to produce crosses for Kane to thrive from. For the opening few months, Spurs were lacklustre in attack, but they are a lot more dynamic now. Pochettino knows that if the team creates chances, the 23-year-old striker will score and many are expecting him to find the back of the net again this weekend.
Everton have kept six clean sheets in their last nine matches. Tottenham will have to be at their best to win this weekend. Although they have beat Stoke City convincingly last weekend, their performances against Gent and Liverpool weren’t great. They need to find the consistency that they showed before Christmas. That said, their home record in the league remains one of the best and they will be happy that they are playing at White Hart Lane on Sunday.
One thing is clear and that is that Kane holds the key for them going forward. If he plays well against Everton, Spurs should take the three points. The focus will be on him and Everton’s Romelu Lukaku. They are both beginning to reach a level where they can be considered world class strikers and they will be two of the several players competing for the golden boot. It will be fascinating to see who will come out on top this weekend and given his recent form, Kane will be confident that he can lead Tottenham to another victory.
