Who are Arsenal’s main competitors?
As mentioned previously, Arsenal did not spend much over the summer, whereas it seems most others did. Manchester City have spent big and if not for Kompany’s injury problems, they would certainly be doing much better. Leicester City have been a welcome anomaly to the league and have been led to by two spectacular players in Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez. Even their bitter rivals Tottenham have spent wisely, bringing in Son, Alderweireld, N’jie, Son and Trippier in the summer; while also shedding some much needed dead weight. Furthermore, teams like Stoke, Liverpool, West Ham have spent well, and wisely in many people’s view.
Man City and Tottenham’s quality seems to be coming through in the second half of the season. Both sides have kept up with Arsenal when they haven’t played well or have had key injuries – mainly in Man City’s case. Spurs are doing very well under Pochettino. They have one of the better strikers in England and play a brand of football that is very suffocating to play against.
Manchester City have now got Aguero close to 100% fit, combined with David Silva, Sterling and De Bruyne (before his injury). When looking at how either team will fair against Arsenal, there are two main factors. Firstly, it will be a serious test if Spurs can get through the second half of the season without burning out, due their high energy style. Secondly, Man City will get stronger as and will be even better when Kompany returns. Leicester City are a different case. They have been near the top for most of the season and have two of the standout players of the year. They must be taken seriously, but if one were to be injured, I doubt they can sustain their title push.
All three teams have as good a chance as Arsenal to win the league, however it is Man City that will be the main competitors. Quite simply, the Citizens have the quality and depth in their squad, but also the experience that the others don’t have.
