Campbell delivers honest verdict when asked about new Arsenal star Tomiyasu
Arsenal completed the signing of Takehiro Tomiyasu on deadline day – and Sol Campbell has given his verdict on TalkSPORT (Wednesday, 9:10AM).
Tomiyasu, 22, has been regularly linked with a move to the Premier League during the summer’s window. Tottenham were said to be very keen.
However, the Japan international has finally swapped Serie A side for Tottenham’s bitter rivals Arsenal. A fee of £20million has changed hands.
It is another example of Arsenal buying young and for the future under the director of sporting director Edu. But Arsenal need results right now.
Asked about the deadline-day addition of Tomiyasu, Campbell says he is a player with potential – but wanted players who could improve Arsenal now.
“£19.8million, defender – good, 22, looks strong, another potential player. That is what we’re looking at, at the moment,” Campbell told TalkSPORT.
“I’d rather sell a couple of players, bring in a player that is ready to go – that can give you instant success and pad it out with a couple with potential.”
Campbell on Tomiyasu: Arsenal need players to hit ground running
A lot of the early-season criticism of Arsenal has been harsh. While they have suffered three losses and sit bottom, Arteta needs time.
His side have suffered from the pandemic at the start of the campaign. No-one wants to go to a newly-promoted team, first game of the season, away.
Manchester City was always hard, made a lot harder by a red card. Chelsea are likely to be City’s closest competitors for the Premier League title.
But the pressure is on and now, Arteta needs his long-term projects to start providing immediate form. Tomiyasu is not exempt from that.
With Hector Bellerin going, Tomiyasu is needed to instantly become a good signing. Campbell is right, though, Arsenal need players for now.
