After making only his sixth appearance for Tottenham in 2018 against Fulham at the weekend, it appears that Toby Alderweireld’s future has taken another step closer to being decided, at least for one more year.
It comes as 20-year-old Cameron Carter-Vickers, who was a regular for Mauricio Pochettino throughout the summer in pre-season, looks set to depart on loan. The Mirror say that Championship trio Swansea City, Ipswich Town and, controversially given his stint at Sheffield United last season, Sheffield Wednesday, are all keen to bring him in whilst the loan window remains open.
The Essex born US international is highly thought of in north London but the decision to loan him out is a clear indication that the manager is ready to count on Toby Alderweireld.
“I told you the players that have the possibility to stay here, I do not talk about him, I talk in general always. I want player commitment with the team. Players that are not happy, from my point of view, everyone can leave. Then it’s different if they can negotiate with Daniel [Levy] and be agreed. But for me I want players who are fully committed with the team and want to fight for the team. The players that are here are all committed.”
Pochettino ranted about the press’ interest in Alderweireld’s status in the team.
It has been no secret that there have been doubts surrounding his future, with Goal among those to say that a deal was close as Alderweireld enters into the final year of his contract with the Lilywhites.
With him now back in the team, it seems that his boss is ready to re-integrate him back into the team. Given that no signings were made to replace him, Eric Dier, whilst a suitable alternative, is not on the same level as the Belgian, who could strengthen Spurs’ defence.
Carter-Vickers’ move away is not only the sensible option to allow him to continue his development for the long-term with regular first team football, which will give him a chance to return and fight for a place in the side next season, but also indicates that Alderweireld may be set to stay until the summer of 2019 at least.
