Calum Chambers has suggested that Mikel Arteta told the Arsenal players after their draw with Everton that he was proud of their performance and that it was a good start, in comments reported by the London Evening Standard.
Arteta’s appointment at the Emirates was confirmed ahead of the clash with Everton on Saturday. Freddie Ljungberg took charge at Goodison Park, but the Spaniard was looking on. And it appears that he was in contact with his new squad following the game.

The match itself was not a classic. The two teams played out a goalless draw that included few genuine chances. But Chambers has stated that Arteta suggested that he was encouraged by what he saw when he spoke to his players after the game.
“The message is we’re all excited to start working with him,” he said, as reported by the London Evening Standard.

“He said that today we put into play what he wanted from us. The message before the game was to be brave, take responsibility and work hard for each other.
“We did that on the pitch today. He said afterwards it’s a good start and there are things to work on. He was proud of the way we worked and how we worked hard today.”

There is a lot of intrigue surrounding Arteta’s tenure. It looks to be a fantastic opportunity for a coach who is yet to take charge of his own team.
But his time working with Pep Guardiola does increase the pressure somewhat. And sceptical Arsenal fans will be hoping that the board have seen something that they will get to see for themselves in the coming months and years.
It will be fascinating to see how Arteta’s plans play out. With the January window just around the corner, there may some Arsenal fans urging the Spaniard to oversee a clear-out. Meanwhile, he may want to take his time to assess every member of the squad before making any big changes.
His message after the draw with Everton suggests that he is ready to give each player a chance to prove that they have a place in his long-term vision.
