Hector Bellerin’s future at Arsenal is up in the air but in Calum Chambers, Mikel Arteta has a player who he can put his cap on for next season.
The 26-year-old has struggled with injury problems but if he can stay fit then the boss could have a ready-made replacement for the wantaway Spaniard.
Chambers was mightily impressive during last night’s 4-0 win over Slavia Prague, with Arsenal reaching the last four of the Europa League for the second time in three seasons.
He registered an assist during the contest, winning two aerial challenges and making two tackles throughout the 90 minutes (Who Scored).
Chambers also finished the game with a pass success ratio of 85.3% and was largely impressive throughout.
The defender has been at the Emirates Stadium since 2016 when he arrived from Southampton for £16 million.
Injury problems have robbed him of more appearances than the 110 he has made to date for the Gunners.
This season he has managed just 13 outings but he has been on the recovery from a serious cruciate knee ligament injury.
Bellerin’s future is up in the air and this summer could be the ideal time for Arsenal to cash in on the long-serving player.
Arteta might hold a desire to sign another right-back but he doesn’t need to spend a fortune.
With a proper pre-season under his belt and more frequent game time, Chambers is more than capable of stepping up and replacing Bellerin in the team.
The £50,000-a-week star is a workaholic and his desire to do well for the club shines through on the pitch.
That level of commitment won’t have gone unnoticed in the eyes of Arteta and he’d be wise to give him a chance to hold down the right-back spot next season.
