Cal Roberts is doing his best to make Newcastle United regret summer release

Despite his excellent performances for the Newcastle United under-23s last season it was no surprise to see the club release Callum ‘Cal’ Roberts in the summer. Clearly, they felt the 22-year-old was not good enough for the Premier League and it was time for him to move on.

What is surprising, is where he has ended up.

Plenty of Newcastle fans did not want to see Roberts go. He scored 14 goals and provided nine assists for the under-23s last term.

He also scored in a 4-2 win over Blackburn Rovers for the senior side in an FA Cup win in January.

It saw him linked with a move to Greek giants Panathinaikos, as reported by SDNA, and he went on trial at Middlesbrough at the start of the season.

But he ended up joining National League North side Blyth Spartans in October instead. The club, currently managed by former Newcastle player Lee Clark, are probably wondering how they managed to bring in the player, especially after his start to life at this level.

Roberts has scored 13 goals in 15 games for the club since his arrival and has his eyes firmly set on working his way back up the Football League pyramid.

Newcastle United fans will just be hoping they do not end up regretting the release of this clearly talented young attacker.
