Caglar Soyuncu might need a Filip Benkovic type loan spell to save his Leicester City career

Last summer, Leicester City spent £19m (figures via The Mirror) to land Caglar Soyuncu from SC Freiburg.

The central defender arrived in England as a highly-rated youngster but he has not had as much game time as he would have liked.

With just six Premier League appearances to his name this season, Soyuncu’s first season in England has been slow progress.

But new Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers rates the 22-year-old and wants him as part of the future plans at the King Power Stadium.

After recalling him for his first game in 2019 last weekend, Rodgers revealed that Soyuncu has a role to play at Leicester, The Mirror reports.

But in order to reach his full potential, the 22-cap Turkey international should seek a loan spell to stake his first-team claim.

With Harry Maguire, Jonny Evans and Wes Morgan competing for the centre-back spots and Filip Benkovic set to return, Soyuncu could be the fifth choice next season.

He should consider following in the footsteps of Benkovic, who joined Celtic on loan last summer.

The Croatian defender has proven himself in the Scottish Premiership and could feature under his old Celtic boss Rodgers next season.

Soyuncu needs to be playing games on a regular basis to develop. That’s why a Benkovic-style loan stint would be beneficial next term.
