Aston Villa manager Dean Smith will be mulling over his options as the end of the January transfer window approaches.
He knows that there is still a lot of work to be done to transform this Aston Villa squad into a promotion pushing side.
One way to bolster his current squad is to bring in another new defender. This month, he has already moved to sign Kortney Hause and recall Tommy Elphick.
But Aston Villa have leaked a lot of goals this season and need more reinforcements across the back four.
According to Tendance Ouest, the agent of Frederic Guilbert has confirmed that Aston Villa have approached him about his client.
The 24-year-old would be an ideal signing for Aston Villa if they can get it over the line, given his versatility at the back.
Predominantly a right-back, Guilbert is also comfortable at centre-half and has even played as a left-back and a winger during his time with SC Caen.
In 19 Ligue 1 games this season, Guilbert has picked up two assists, as well as impressing with 63 tackles, 43 blocks, 82 clearances and 50 interceptions, as per Who Scored.
The ex-Bordeaux man has plenty of experience in the French top division, racking up a tally of well over 150 career appearances already.
Guilbert would be an immediate upgrade on out-of-sorts right-back Alan Hutton, while providing cover in central defence.
This could be the instant defensive fix that Aston Villa need to start progressing up the league table.
