'By far the best': Spurs-linked centre-back gets 10/10 in Wednesday international display
Reported Spurs transfer target Jannik Vestergaard put in a superb display for Denmark on Wednesday night.
Sky Sports reported in May that Tottenham had made enquiries about the Southampton defender.
Vestergaard is entering the final year of his contract at St Mary’s as speculation on his future begins to grow.
And his display for Denmark against Germany on Wednesday will have surely given the Spurs hierarchy food for thought.
The Danes came from behind to earn a 1-1 draw against the four-time world champions at the Tivoli Stadium.
Germany took the lead on 48 minutes through Florian Neuhaus but Yussuf Poulsen equalised in the 71st minute.
Danish outlet DR gave Vestergaard a 10/10 rating for his display in the pre-Euro 2020 friendly.
“With the newly crowned CL winner Andreas Christensen resting in the stands, there was room in the starting line-up for tall Jannik Vestergaard, who took the opportunity to strongly recommend himself to national coach Hjulmand,” they wrote.
“The stopper was Southampton was by far the best Dane before the break with consistent interventions and a couple of fine balls played out from the back line – and he kept the level all the way to the last whistle.”
“Definitely one of the best”
Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl thinks Vestergaard is one of the best defenders in the Premier League.
“I think he feels at the moment like a real leader on the pitch,” his manager told Hampshire News in April.
“When he performs well and shows the form that he has shown since the summer break, since then he has been physically strong, he is definitely one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League.”
At 6ft 6in tall and with plenty of experience for club and country, Vestergaard is a dominating presence at the back.
Spurs’ defence has let the club down on too many occasions over the past few years.
If Tottenham are to get back to their best, Vestergaard would be a great Spurs transfer target.
