'Buying him': Chairman says he was about to buy 21-year-old off West Ham before they u-turned
Darragh MacAnthony has told the Hard Truth podcast that Peterborough United were set to buy West Ham United’s Conor Coventry before the Hammers’ u-turned.
Coventry has joined Peterborough on loan from West Ham, but it seems that the deal was set to be a permanent one early on in the summer.
David Moyes gave Coventry plenty of chances over pre-season and he really seized the opportunity.
Coventry was actually included in West Ham’s match day squads early on in the campaign, with the Hammers ultimately deciding that he was too talented to release on a long-term basis.
But after the signing of Nikola Vlasic and Alex Kral, West Ham opted to offer the youngster the chance to go out on loan until the end of the season.
And MacAnthony thinks that Posh have got hold of a real talent.
“We were originally buying him, and then the player did very well pre-season at West Ham, which scuppered the buy,” he said.
“So then it became let’s get him on loan, because we know he’s very talented.
“We’d spoken to Jack Collison and Jack Taylor, who had played with him at under-21 level for Ireland.”
Coventry actually still hasn’t met his new teammates as he has been away on international duty.
However, Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson has suggested that the West Ham loanee could be thrown straight in this weekend, ahead of his side’s clash with Sheffield United.
West Ham, meanwhile, will hope that they have enough cover in central midfield to cope with Coventry now.
West Ham are competing across domestic and European competition this term, but do have the likes of Mark Noble and Kral, who will be able to fill in for Tomas Soucek and Declan Rice.
