'But I fancy': Mark Lawrenson predicts Leeds vs West Ham
Mark Lawrenson has told BBC Sport that Leeds United do not pose the same threat going forward this season, but he believes that the Whites will beat West Ham at Elland Road this weekend.
Leeds go into Saturday’s game still awaiting their first win in the Premier League this season.
And Marcelo Bielsa is having to contend with something of an injury crisis right now.
The likes of Diego Llorente, Robin Koch, Luke Ayling, Raphinha, Jack Harrison and Patrick Bamford all have question marks hanging over them. Pascal Struijk meanwhile, is suspended.
West Ham, on the other hand, have made an incredibly bright start to the season. They were one kick away from going into this game unbeaten in the top-flight.
But they got some revenge on Manchester United in midweek, knocking them out of the Carabao Cup.
David Moyes’s men will surely be favourites for many, therefore. But Lawrenson has actually backed Leeds to end their wait for that victory.
“Leeds are yet to win this season, and they don’t seem to carry the same threat going forward as they did last season,” he told BBC Sport, as he predicted a 2-1 win for the Whites.
“Despite their poor form, I still think Marcelo Bielsa’s side will come good sooner rather than later. West Ham’s only league defeat came against Manchester United in very strange circumstances, but I fancy Leeds to edge this one.”
Leeds cannot afford to waste their chances if they hope to beat West Ham
One of the biggest problems for Leeds in their last few games has been taking their chances.
Fulham took them to penalties in midweek. And they had to settle for a point away at Newcastle after creating more than enough to win the game.
And even in the emphatic defeat to Liverpool, Rodrigo squandered a golden opportunity to put Leeds in front early on.
The fact that they are creating opportunities will give them hope. But they will also be aware of how much West Ham can hurt them if they let any chances pass them by.
