Celtic face a battle to sign a longstanding target this January.
Nick Powell is on Celtic’s radar as they eye a cut-price move with his Wigan Athletic contract expiring next summer.
But according to TEAMtalk, Red Bull Leipzig are keen on signing Powell on a pre-contract agreement.
In order to land the 24-year-old, Celtic might need to launch a January bid to get this one over the line.
Powell could have his work cut out to break into the side in his preferred number 10 role, given the form of Tom Rogic and Ryan Christie.
But Powell offers versatility; he can also operate as a central striker or on the wings.
With Odsonne Edouard as the main striker and Leigh Griffiths often injured, having Powell as a back-up choice would bolster Brendan Rodgers’ centre-forward options.
The lure of the Bundesliga will surely tempt the ex-Manchester United forward, given the recent success of Jadon Sancho out in Germany.
That is why Celtic need to act quickly if they are to get this deal over the line.
If Rodgers is serious about signing Powell from Wigan, he may have to abandon plans to sign him for free in the summer and instead target a cut-price deal this January.
