Bruno Guimaraes has named one of the world’s best players, and Newcastle United could have signed him for a bargain in 2021.

Newcastle United have spent plenty of money in the past few years on the likes of Anthony Gordon, Lewis Hall, and Guimaraes himself.

Eddie Howe’s squad was bolstered by the arrival of Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa this past summer, increasing his attacking options.

However, the Magpies could have had one of the best forwards in world football in their squad several years ago, who would have been a revelation in the Premier League today.

Bruno Guimaraes is a fan of former Newcastle target Ousmane Dembele

Guimaraes spoke to the media ahead of their Champions League game against Barcelona, where he named the four players he believes are the best in the world right now.

He gave the answers “Lamine Yamal, Ousmane Dembele, Vitinha & Raphinha,” and one of those is a name the Magpies were almost very familiar with.

Dembele might be tearing up world football for PSG right now as one of the most exciting wingers on the planet, but he almost ended up playing at St James’ Park.

Back in 2021, Newcastle United had been linked by MARCA with making a move for the France international before his Barcelona contract expired.

It came at a time when there was a lot of excitement surrounding Newcastle United’s ownership and where the money might have been spent, and in hindsight, Dembele wouldn’t have been a bad investment.

Dembele eventually signed a contract extension, which set his release clause at a reasonable £43.5million, but Newcastle would likely have snapped him up even cheaper than that at the time.

Ousmane Dembele has been a threat for PSG

Dembele’s talent was evident during his time at Barcelona, which is why Newcastle United were interested in signing him.

However, he’s taken things to another level since joining PSG, becoming a regular lethal option for the Ligue 1 outfit.

The 28-year-old has scored 43 goals and provided 32 assists in 99 games for PSG since joining the club in 2023, which is the type of attacking quality Newcastle United are seeking to break into the Premier League’s top four consistently.
