Bruno Guimaraes and Sven Botman were so impressed with 27-year-old Newcastle player against Palace yesterday

Newcastle United advanced to the next round of the Carabao Cup last night after a shootout victory over Crystal Palace.

Eddie Howe used the match as an opportunity to rotate his squad and give a few players an opportunity from kick off.

Jonjo Shelvey made his first start since April, and Howe has admitted he’s looks fitter than he’s ever seen him before.

There was also another start for exciting talent Elliot Anderson after Howe blocked him from leaving the club in the summer.

Javier Manquillo and Jamaal Lascelles also returned to the starting line-up, while Allan Saint-Maximin stepped up his recovery from injury.

Although Newcastle couldn’t score in normal time, they were indebted to Nick Pope during the shootout.

The England international saved three spot kicks to send the Magpies through to the fourth round.

He may have even given Gareth Southgate something to think about if England head to penalties in Qatar.

However, Bruno Guimaraes and Sven Botman were both impressed by the performance of Matt Targett.

Targett came in at left-back last night after Dan Burn was shifted into the centre of defence.

It was a welcome return to action for the 27-year-old who will be pleased with 90 minutes and a clean sheet under his belt.

The full-back took to Instagram after the match to celebrate his side’s victory.

He posted a picture with the caption, ‘Into the hat for the next round’, followed by some Newcastle United-coloured hearts.

Guimarares and Botman both replied to Targett, and clearly loved his performance against Palace yesterday.

Targett has found himself out of the Newcastle side during their fantastic run of results recently.

Burn has become Howe’s number one left-back, and has been in sensational form.

Targett left Aston Villa nearly twelve months ago after being replaced by Lucas Digne.

He may now have suffered the same fate at Newcastle given Howe’s preference for Burn.

Targett isn’t as strong defensively as Burn, and doesn’t offer the same aerial threat.

However, he does have a wicked delivery from crosses and set pieces, although Kieran Trippier fills that role now.

The left-back may have to consider moving again to start playing first team football soon.

Given how impressed Guimaraes and Botman were with Targett yesterday, Howe’s likely to want to keep hold of him as an option for now.
