Chelsea produced an incredible comeback in the last minutes of injury time to beat Manchester United 4-3 at Stamford Bridge, as in-form star Cole Palmer scored a hat-trick for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.
Chelsea started well – Conor Gallagher opened the scoring before England star Palmer scored the first of his two penalties. But Manchester United came roaring back, with manager Erik ten Hag’s job on the line.
Alejandro Garnacho scored twice, either side of a Bruno Fernandes header. Eight minutes of injury time called. Palmer scored a penalty after Diogo Dalot fouled Noni Madueke after beating him on the right.
Then, with the game still being played after the penalty and VAR checks, Chelsea won a corner. Enzo Fernandez played it short to Palmer, who lashed in a shot – deflected into the net by Scott McTominay.
Bruno Fernandes comments on Chelsea’s second penalty
Incredible game, and what an advert for the Premier League. Ten Hag won’t think the same, with his job under more pressure than ever before. Fernandes spoke to TNT after the match, about the late penalty.

He admits that it was probably the right decision to award Pochettino’s men a second penalty of the match, even if it saw his side lose the lead. The loss arguably ends any hope of a fourth-placed finish.
“After the penalty, Diogo got a bit of a slap on the face and he went down, and I haven’t seen the replay but I think maybe when he goes down he touches him and it’s probably a penalty,” Fernandes said.
Erik ten Hag has got to go, he cannot stop the Man United rot
Tottenham often get called Spursy, but Manchester United’s loss on Thursday night – despite the late show and the way it came about, was hardly a surprise. This is a frail side, lacking in any confidence.
Thursday night’s loss was proof that ten Hag cannot stop the rot at Manchester United. Moments like this are damning. It is going to be difficult to recover after that one, for the red side of Manchester, now.
Fifth place is expected to promise Champions League football but with eight league games to play, ten Hag’s men now sit nine points behind Tottenham. They should be worried about the teams behind them.
