According to The Sun, Newcastle are keen to sign Nice winger Allan Saint-Maximin. Steve Bruce wants to add the 22-year-old to his squad at St James’ Park ahead of the new campaign. A deal has not yet been struck with the French outfit, but the Tyneside club are thought to be preparing a £20 million offer.
Bruce has clearly identified improving the Magpies’ attacking contingent as a priority for this summer. The club have already recently broken their transfer record to land Brazilian striker Joelinton.
Saint-Maximin would be another fine addition and would certainly improve Newcastle going forward. However, even if Bruce is able to bring in the Frenchman, he should still find room in his plans for Rolando Aarons.
The 23-year-old winger is something of a forgotten man at Newcastle. A product of the club’s academy, Aarons burst onto the scene at St James’ Park in 2014, and made ten Premier League appearances for the Magpies over the course of the 2015/16 campaign. However, he has since then receded from the first team picture, partially due to a string of injuries.
He has spent the last two years out on loan, most recently with Sheffield Wednesday, where Bruce was in charge. Bruce was able to get some good performances out of Aarons at Hillsborough. The manager knows Aarons’ game well and knows what he is capable of.
Aarons remains a very talented player with huge potential. If any coach can help the wide man get his Newcastle career back on track it is Bruce. The 58-year-old boss should afford the former England under-20 international the chance to impress this season and save his Newcastle career, regardless of who else is brought to the club this summer.
