‘Brilliant’: Some Newcastle United fans react as Paul Dummett reportedly agrees to one-year contract extension

Some Newcastle United fans have been reacting on social media to reports by Chronicle Live, claiming that Steve Bruce’s side have triggered a one-year extension in Paul Dummett’s contract.

The Welshman was set to become a free agent from the end of next month with his deal expiring this June, but will now remain at St. James’ Park through to the summer of 2022.

Newcastle have elected to trigger the 12-month extension in his current £35,000-per-week (Spotrac) contract, after Dummett proved his fitness to the Toon hierarchy over the latter half of this season.

Dummett missed much of 2020 after sustaining a season-ending hamstring injury during an FA Cup third-round replay with Rochdale in January, and was later sidelined again with an Achilles problem.

Celtic fans left short-changed by Sky Sports once again

The 29-year-old would not make his campaign debut until starting December’s 1-1 draw at home to Fulham, but would only feature for a further 97 minutes until March when Bruce opted to recall the five-cap international.

Dummett has since played 990 unbroken minutes of Premier League football at either full-back or centre-half, in which Newcastle have taken four wins and four draws to secure their top-flight status.

Here’s how these Magpies supporters reacted to the Chronicle’s claim that Newcastle have extended Dummett’s stay at their club that began at the age of nine
