‘Brilliant’, ‘Ronaldo who?’: Some Spurs fans react as they sign player Arsenal reportedly wanted

Spurs fans have taken to Twitter to praise the signing of Pape Matar Sarr amid reported competition from Arsenal.

Tottenham, the Gunners and several other clubs have been linked with the Metz prodigy over the summer.

However, more recent speculation seemed to suggest Fabio Paratici was on course to land Sarr.

Indeed, the player was reportedly keen to join Tottenham after holding initial talks.

And on Friday afternoon, Spurs confirmed that the 18-year-old was now on their books.

According to the Daily Mail, Tottenham have agreed a £14.5million deal plus add-ons.

As well as Spurs and Arsenal, Sarr was linked with the likes of Aston Villa, Everton and Chelsea

He will remain on loan at Metz until the end of the season.

Tottenham’s Sarr announcement came at roughly the same time that Manchester United confirmed Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to Old Trafford.

Cue plenty of Spurs fans joking that their deal is the biggest one of the day:

Spurs sign Sarr: The story so far

Sarr, a box-to-box midfielder, has been with Metz for less than a year, but has made waves at the French club.

He joined last September from Senegal-based Generation Foot, penning a five-year deal.

Sarr began in Metz’s reserve team but finished the season with 25 first-team appearances and four goals.

In addition, the teenager has already won two caps for Senegal.

PSG and Senegal midfielder Idrissa Gueye is a big fan of Sarr.

“He’s my type of player, I admire him a lot, loads of talent,” Get French Football News quotes him as saying.

“He’s the future of Senegal.”
