‘Brilliant’: Jurgen Klinsmann blown away by £45m defender Tottenham reportedly want to sign

Jurgen Klinsmann was left blown away by reported Tottenham Hotspur target Josko Gvardiol during the BBC’s coverage of Croatia vs Morocco yesterday

Tottenham have been linked with a move for RB Leipzig star Gvardiol over the past year. Back in May, the Evening Standard claimed they were looking at the Croatian alongside Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni.

Antonio Conte eventually brought in Clement Lenglet on a season-long loan from Barcelona over the summer. As things stand, the Frenchman is set to return to Spain as there’s no option for Spurs to buy the 27-year-old.

The north Londoners’’ interest in Gvardiol remains, with Tuttomercato claiming that his countryman Ivan Perisic was tasked with convincing the 20-year-old to join him at Tottenham during the World Cup.

Gvardiol has really caught the eye in Qatar with Croatia and Zlatko Dalic’s men secured third-place at the World Cup yesterday.

He put in another commanding display at the back and Tottenham legend Klinsmann was full of praise for the youngster as Croatia beat Morocco 2-1.

Klinsmann blown away by Gvardiol

Gvardiol was undone by a brilliant run from Lionel Messi during Croatia’s 3-0 defeat to Argentina in the semi-final on Tuesday.

But Klinsmann believes the defender will learn a valuable lesson from the mistake and that he bounced back superbly yesterday.

Klinsmann told the BBC after the game: “This is the kind of experience he takes with him now and also getting his moment with Messi, ok it’s the best player in the world [he laughed].

“Take that lesson and then move on. He showed that today he shook it off and had a brilliant game again. So, there’s a lot more to come from Gvardiol.”

Spurs were seemingly one of the frontrunners for Gvardiol’s signature over the summer but the Croatian star was happy to remain at Leipzig, according to Football.London

Now, Conte’s men look set to face increased competition for Gvardiol’s signature after his displays in Qatar.

The Leipzig defender is now reportedly being tracked by the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City, making a move to north London seem unlikely at this moment in time.

90 Min reports that his £45 million release clause will become active during the summer, which is certainly not a huge fee in the current market. But Spurs will struggle to compete with the likes of City and Chelsea for his signature.

TBR View: Spurs will have to look at other targets

Tottenham fans will know all too well about some of the players they’ve missed out on over the years. Gvardiol could be set to become another one of those names, but Spurs may not be to blame for this one.

The player was clearly keen on staying in Germany over the summer and his performances since have attracted the attention of some of the biggest clubs.

Conte may have to look at other targets now and there are plenty of talented centre-backs out there. The Bastoni deal still seems like a difficult one, but the likes of Piero Hincapie could be a brilliant alternative for Spurs.
