'Brilliant future ahead of him': Gabriel says Arsenal have a 'very promising' 21-year-old in their ranks

Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes has lauded Gunners teammate William Saliba, in conversation with Sky Sports.

The 24-year-old says his fellow Arsenal centre-back is a “very promising” talent with a “brilliant future ahead of him”.

Saliba joined Arsenal three years ago from French outfit Saint-Etienne for a reported £27million.

He spent his first season on the Gunners’ books back on loan at his former club.

Then, Saliba spent the second half of 2020-21 at Nice, before playing for Marseille last season.

The Frenchman enjoyed a fruitful stint on loan at Marseille, making 51 appearances including 36 in Ligue 1.

Saliba’s efforts saw him win the Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year award and also make the team of the season.

During the last three years, Mikel Arteta often came in for criticism from fans for his approach towards Saliba.

However, the youngster needed time to develop, and against Crystal Palace, Arteta’s decision was vindicated.

Saliba won the Man of the Match award for his display against Patrick Vieira’s side at Selhurst Park on Friday.

“He has added a lot of quality”

Gabriel, speaking to Sky Sports, spoke of his friendship with Saliba as well as the player’s talent and potential.

“He’s a young player who came here at a very young age and then went out to get some experience.

“Now, despite his age, he is already playing for the French national team. That tells you how good he is.

“He’s here to help the team and he’s a very promising talent.

“He is a good friend of mine already. We speak French together, so that helps.

“He has added a lot of quality to the team and I think he has a brilliant future ahead of him.”

Arsenal’s defence was one of their weak points not long ago.

Now, Arteta has three world-class centre-backs he can call upon in Gabriel, Saliba and Ben White.

And that’s before mentioning the quality and increasing strength in depth throughout the whole squad.
