‘Brilliant’ 28-year-old player has been told he can leave Aston Villa this month

As well as those who might arrive to boost Unai Emery’s Aston Villa squad in January, there are a few players who could leave.

Emery’s side are having a brilliant season and the January transfer window looks like an excellent chance to cement their bid for Champions League football.

Villa are said to primarily want a full-back this month, with it now seeming as if Kosta Nedeljkovic is close to completing a move from Red Star Belgrade.

The 18-year-old defender is clearly a nod to the future, however, there’s still work to be done to boost Villa’s squad in the here and now.

If the club can also recruit an experienced striker this month it seems as if Jhon Duran could head out on loan before the window closes.

But in order to fund this activity, Villa will surely need to move players on.

And according to The Athletic, it now seems as if Calum Chambers could be nearing an exit.

The 28-year-old has been told he’s free to leave the club this month.

Despite his pedigree, ‘brilliant’ Chambers has failed to make an impression at Villa and it seems as if a departure could suit all parties.

Competition for places is rife at the back for Villa, and Chambers simply doesn’t seem to be the right profile for a full-back role.

And when you consider he’s then competing with Ezri Konsa and Diego Carlos at right centre-back, he doesn’t really stand a chance.

It almost seems as if Chambers was good enough for the Villa of yesteryear, but he’s not equipped to follow them on their current trajectory.

Emery clearly has lofty ambitions for his Villa squad in January, and Chambers simply isn’t part of it.

That being said, Villa are now interested in signing a forward who’s been taking the Serie A by storm this year.

It certainly seems as if Emery’s forward line could do with a boost this month, and such a move could prove a crucial one.
