Brighton and Hove Albion winger Percy Tau has moved closer toward playing in the Champions League next season. However, his game against Dynamo Kiev yesterday was not without incident. Tau was sent off for the first time in his career as his current loan club Club Brugge battled the Ukrainian side.

Tau received his marching orders in the 84th minute, with the Belgian side 2-1 down on the night but going through on away goals.

But his dismissal did not prove to be decisive. Ruud Vormer and Lois Openda scored for Brugge whilst a Brandon Mechele own goal saw the game finish 3-3. Tau’s side are therefore through to the next round of the Champions League, winning 4-3 on aggregate.

Brighton fans can be very excited about Tau’s development.

The club spent a fee reported by The Sun to be in the region of £2.8 million to bring Tau from Mamelodi Sundowns in July 2018.

Unfortunately, he has not been able to gain a work permit to join the club and spent last season on loan at another Belgian side, Union SG.

His form there caught the attention of Brugge and Tau has scored two goals in the opening two games of the Belgian league season.

Whilst his red card was unfortunate, the progress of Brugge can only help Tau develop. Should his temporary club also advance to the Champions League Group Stage, that will only help his claims for a work permit in the UK.
