Brien Deane hammers Leeds United supporters for treatment of Patrick Bamford

Leeds United hero Brian Deane has hammered sections of the Whites’ fanbase for their continued criticism of striker Patrick Bamford – after Leeds’ number nine missed a string of chances during the 1-0 defeat to Wigan on Saturday.

Leeds’ difficult form continued as memories of last season’s 2-1 defeat to Wigan at Elland Road came back to haunt Marcelo Bielsa’s side. Last term, the defeat to the Latics all but confirmed a place in the play-offs, rather than the top two.

This time, a deflected corner looped into the Leeds net just before the hour mark, after Bamford, Jack Harrison, Helder Costa and more missed chances. It was another example of Leeds dominating possession, shots and territory, but failing to win.

Bamford has come in for huge criticism this season, despite scoring 12 goals in 29 Championship fixtures and laying on three assists. With the signing of Jean-Kevin Augustin, fans were very critical, but ex-Leeds man Deane has backed the striker.

But Deane did also criticise Bamford for his celebrations on Tuesday night, when Leeds beat Millwall 3-2. The ex-Chelsea striker scored a brace, including the winner, and put his hands over his ears – suggesting he was blocking out the critics.

TBR’s view – Augustin or Bamford against Forest?

Leeds travel to the City Ground on Saturday to take on Nottingham Forest in what will be a very difficult clash. However, Forest go into the game after suffering their first defeat in eight games on Saturday – a 2-1 loss to Pep Clotet’s Birmingham City.

Supporters had expected new signing Augustin to at least be included in the Leeds side on Saturday, but the Frenchman was nowhere to be seen. Although the criticism of Bamford is harsh, surely it is time to see Augustin thrown in at the deep end.
