Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley is reportedly considering bringing in Brendan Rodgers to replace Rafa Benitez.
According to The Mirror, Benitez’s job at Newcastle is far from secure with Rodgers considered as an alternative.
Ashley will be hoping to lure Rodgers back down south with Premier League football.
But the Northern Irishman would make a mistake if he leaves his Celtic role for Newcastle.
He would be trading the chance to win a third consecutive domestic treble for a relegation battle.
Rodgers would give up his chance to get Celtic somewhere in the Europa League and instead be trying to divert Newcastle’s sinking ship which appears destined for the Championship unless something drastic happens.
Benitez is a top manager. And he has struggled at Newcastle due to under-spending in the transfer windows.
Newcastle are a world-renowned club and the chance to join them would be tempting. But at this moment, the manager’s job looks like a poisoned chalice.
At Celtic, Rodgers has started his project and he is doing a great job.
For the first time since he took over, he faces a genuine challenge to win the title and he should relish this test.
The Newcastle job might tempt him one day but for now, his best option is remaining with the Bhoys.
