Brendan Rodgers feels Leicester were denied penalty and former Aston Villa pair agree

Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers feels his side should have been awarded a penalty in the first half of last night’s EFL Cup semi-final second leg defeat against Aston Villa.

Villa booked their spot at Wembley via a stoppage time winner by Trezeguet, but on Sky Sports, via Daily Mail, Rodgers fumed over the decision not to award a penalty for handball by Marvelous Nakamba.

He said: “I thought we should have had a definite handball for a penalty,” and former Villa duo Lee Hendrie and Emile Heskey, commenting on the game as pundits, both agreed.

Hendrie stated: “I think it’s a penalty. They’ve got a case, for how far his arm’s away from his body. There’s a clear case for a penalty.”

Heskey added: “He’s not in a natural position, when you’re not in a natural position, it’s a penalty.”

TBR’s View – Another poor night for VAR

First and foremost, it should be said that Villa were worthy of a place at Wembley for the way they caused Leicester problems in both legs despite having less of the ball.

And it’s not a forgone conclusion Leicester would have netted the penalty. Ayoze Perez took on the duties against West Ham and scored, but Jamie Vardy missed the one before that at Burnley.

But on a night where VAR was in operation and there’s a clear angle of the ball travelling a fair distance and hitting Nakamba’s outstretched arm, a penalty should have been given.
