Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes featured for Brazil as they secured a last-gasp 2-1 win against Chile in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier at Estadio Nacional Julio Martínez Pradanos.

The hosts took the lead in the opening exchanges of the game through Eduardo Vargas but Igor Jesus restored parity before the interval.

While it looked like the game would end all square, Luis Henrique struck with one minute left on the clock to give Brazil all three points.

Gabriel has been in fine form for Arsenal this season and played the full 90 minutes for his country as they secured a hard-fought win.

Here’s how the Brazilian media reacted to his performance in what turned out to be a tough away game.

Starting alongside Paris Saint-Germain’s Marquinhos at the back, Gabriel couldn’t have done much to prevent Vargas’ opening goal.

However, he produced an assured display at the back as they came away with a win.

Describing his performance as more ‘demanding’ than that of his center-half partner, Globo rated him 6/10, saying: “A little more demanding than his teammate in the Chilean attack, but with a performance at the same level.

It was also noted that the towering defender wasn’t as adventurous as he usually is for Arsenal with his line-breaking passes.

“He draws attention for attempting fewer vertical moves with the ball than he does at Arsenal.”

Gabriel had 108 touches of the ball and completed 87% of his passes (83/95) while also making four clearances and two tackles.

He also made one key pass and completed 11 of the 14 long balls he attempted to cap off a fine display for his team as he earned himself a Sofascore rating of 7.5, making him the highest-rated player on the pitch.

Gabriel has established himself as one of the best defenders in world football and will look to carry on in the same vein for club and country for the rest of the season.
