Bowyer expects Longstaff to chip in with more goals after breaking league duck

Sean Longstaff scored his first Premier League goal for Newcastle last night in a comfortable 2-0 victory over Burnley.

That continued the English midfielder’s incredible rise this season and he is now an undroppable member of Rafa Benitez’s plans.

It has been an outstanding year but one man who may have been last surprised than most is Gary Bowyer, who managed Longstaff while he was on loan at Blackpool last season.

Bowyer was full of praise for Longstaff and told Sky Sports: “He did brilliantly for us. There is so much more to come. He has a fantastic engine but it was his goal return from midfield that was outstanding. He can score from long range.”

“That inner drive to get better is there. Mentally he is tough and very level-headed. His knowledge of the game is good too. He was forever tapping into the knowledge of Jimmy Ryan and Jay Spearing who played in his position as well. He will only improve while he is at Newcastle.”

These words from Bowyer – who has worked so closely with Longstaff – will only encourage Newcastle fans that they have a real gem on their hands.

The supporters can expect to see him chip in with more goals and if he rams home a screamer like Fabian Schar did last night then St James’ Park will erupt.

Longstaff has all the tools to carry on getting better and offer Newcastle supporters hope for the future in uncertain times.
