Some of the Liverpool attackers need a rest
Liverpool’s fading performance won’t be a surprise to many sports scientists as their players have had to do a lot of running this season. Their work rate and relentless running has been the reason for their surge to the top three, but it was always going to difficult to maintain, especially over the winter months. The gegenpressing is a system that takes a lot out of the players and the effects can be seen in Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino’s performances.
Although the former got a goal and an assist, he wasn’t at his best and faded in the second half, before being withdrawn from the action. He is definitely tiring from the work that he has had to do over the opening months of the season and needs to rest for at least one match. The same can be said of Roberto Firmino. The Brazilian had a change of role, but he was laboured and never threatened the Bournemouth back four. As the game went on, Liverpool became less and less threatening in the final third and that is a result of the fatigue in the squad. Jurgen Klopp needs to manage his squad over the coming month or they could lose ground on the leading pack.
