‘Both been outstanding’: Paul Merson wowed by two Newcastle United players

Paul Merson has lavished praise on Newcastle United defender Kieran Trippier and central midfielder Bruno Guimaraes.

Both men have been signed by Eddie Howe since the takeover and they have arguably been the club’s best two players since.

Merson wrote in the Daily Star that Newcastle’s recruitment has been spot on under Howe and tipped them to finish in the European spots.

He said: “There’s no reason why Newcastle can’t go all the way and qualify for Europe this season. I have been so impressed with how they’ve approached the takeover.

“They haven’t started splashing loads of money because they have a lorry-load of cash. It’s been sensible business and steady progress.

“As soon as you sign someone for £80million the players that have been there will go ‘well, what about us, how much is he on?’

“The recruitment has been excellent. You only have to look at Bruno Guimaraes and Kieran Trippier, who have both been outstanding.”

Newcastle have been prudent with their money, signing players who are hungry to make a difference for the club and take them in the right direction.

Agents have tried to flog them so many players looking for moves away from ‘elite’ clubs on big money but they have not bought into it.

Trippier and Bruno are evidence of that and they also took the gamble on Newcastle in January, when it wasn’t even clear whether the club would stay up.

That is just another reason why they are loved on Tyneside at a hugely exciting time for the club.
