Sunderland dumped Newcastle’s under-21 side out of the Checkatrade Trophy last night with a dominant display.

At The Stadium of Light, Sunderland had to wait until the second half to break the deadlock.

But once they did, the floodgates opened, with four second half goals for Jack Ross’ men.

An own goal got the ball rolling before Charlie Wyke, Chris Maguire and Benji Kimpioka added gloss to the score line.

The Black Cats progress to the next round of the EFL Trophy and earn some bragging rights over their North East rivals.

Although it was Newcastle’s youth side, Sunderland still had plenty of young players on show and rested some key players too.

One youngster that stood out was Bali Mumba, who operated in a central midfield role.

The 17-year-old has had a frustrating season, managing just seven outings before last night, despite having a starting role at the beginning of the campaign.

But the England youth international certainly sent a message to Ross after a dominant display in the middle of the park.

This is what Sunderland fans thought of Mumba’s performance last night.
