Borussia Monchengladbach vs Manchester City: Match preview and predicted line-ups
Manchester City face a difficult trip to Borussia Monchengladbach with the opportunity to confirm their place in the last 16 of the competition. Last time out in this competition, they achieved a famous victory over Barcelona and they will be hoping to deliver a similar performance in Germany. Last season the club managed to reach the semi-finals of the Champions League, but they are much better under Pep Guardiola and will have ambitions of getting even further this year.
The reason that they targeted Guardiola is due to his excellent track record at the top of the game. He has rarely suffered from failure and he is one of the few managers that can take Manchester City to the next level. They have been a good European club over the last four or five years, but they want to be an elite club, one that can compete with Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Juventus and Real Madrid on a regular basis. It is early days, but there has been a clear mentality change at the club and Guardiola will be encouraged by the team’s start to the season.
Their opposition on Wednesday have had a difficult start to the league season and are currently 13th in the Bundesliga. They have already fallen to five league defeats and their Champions League form has only been fractionally better. Monchengladbach had the opportunity to put the pressure on City and Barcelona, but they failed to beat Celtic in Germany, which was a huge disappointment. They are likely to finish third in the group, unless there are some major surprises during the final four matches.
Although Manchester City are well placed in the Premier League, they haven’t been at their best in recent weeks. It is clear that Pep Guardiola is still adjusting to a new league, with his side taking only two wins from their last five matches in the Premier League. That said, they haven’t lost which provides them with a platform to push on from.
Monchengladbach haven’t been great recently and have failed to win in the month of November, with their last two league matches finishing in losses. They have a good squad and should be challenging in the top six of the league, which has increased the pressure on Andre Schubert. Although their season won’t be defined by matches like these, it is important that the side deliver a performance that can be built on.
Thorgan Hazard is likely to lead the line for the German side alongside Raffael. This could be a good opportunity for Chelsea fans to watch their promising defender Andreas Christensen who is one of the key players for Monchengladbach this season.
Yaya Toure came back into the side at the weekend won’t be in the side on Wednesday as he isn’t in the Champions League squad, which means that David Silva could be recalled to the side.

Vincent Kompany will be missing for the trip to Germany after another injury picked up at the weekend. It looks like the centre back won’t be able to get back to his best, which is a huge disappointment for City and football fans alike. Fabian Delph is also set to miss Wednesday’s match with a groin injury.
Monchengladbach will be missing a number of players on Wednesday. Mamadou Doucoure, Alvaro Dominguez, Marvin Schulz, Moritz Nicolas, Patrick Herrmann and Josip Drmic are all ruled out of the match against Manchester City.
It is difficult to see Manchester City not getting the three points on Wednesday as they begin to find their stride again. On the other hand, Monchengladbach have been disappointing since their draw to Celtic in their last outing in the Champions League. It won’t be an easy match for the English side as Monchengladbach have a lot of talent in their squad, but City should have enough to get the victory.
