West Ham United progressed into the fourth round of the FA Cup with a 1-0 win over Stockport County on Monday night and Mipo Odubeko was handed his first-team debut by David Moyes – prompting reaction from a Borussia Dortmund player.
Craig Dawson finally made the breakthrough as he headed home from a short corner, largely thanks to a delightful cross from winger Jarrod Bowen. Moyes was confident enough of a win to hand 18-year-old Odubeko a few minutes at the end.
The young striker, who has been called up to Ireland’s Under-17 side already, joined West Ham from Manchester United’s academy in October 2019 and has since impressed in glimpses for West Ham. He scored a brace in this season’s EFL Trophy.
That has seemingly caught the eye of Moyes and with Sebastian Haller being sold to Ajax and a replacement yet to be brought in, Odubeko was given a run out – replacing Michail Antonio late on. The teen posted on Instagam after the match.
Odubeko will be looking to take full advantage of the lack of strikers at West Ham over the next couple of weeks, though it is increasingly likely that West Ham will bring in a replacement for French target man Haller following his exit.
Declan Rice sent a message to Odebuko on Instagram following his debut outing, while Dortmund’s £25million (Sky Sports) midfielder Jude Bellingham responded to his post – commenting a three-word message: “Really nice Mipo”.
