Journalist: Newcastle could now miss out on £33m signing, just days after thinking they'd finalised a deal

Newcastle United face a huge fight on their hands to land Reims striker, Hugo Ekitike, with Fabrizio Romano claiming Borussia Dortmund are now in the hunt.

Dortmund, of course, are seeking a new striker after agreeing a deal with Manchester City to sell Erling Haaland. The German outfit are well known for getting replacements in quickly, and it seems Ekitike is a prime target.

Taking to his Twitter account earlier today, respected journalist Romano tweeted out how Ekitike is high on Dortmund’s list of targets, despite reports Newcastle want him. Indeed, it was only this weekend that reports suggested Newcastle thought they’d got a deal for Ekitike more or less done.

The young striker is one of the hottest properties in Europe at the moment. January saw a number of clubs interested in him, and a deal to go to Newcastle was looking close at one point. Since then, it’s been claimed that Arsenal are also watching Ekitike’s situation closely.

The summer transfer window is set to be a big one for Newcastle. There are differing reports of what they might spend, although Eddie Howe is expected to be given money to improve his squad.Dortmund’s interest here, though, will not be what Howe wants to see.

There is no denying that Hugo Ekitike is a top player in the making and that’s why Newcastle will face a big fight on their hands to sign him.

Ekitike is a young striker who seems to have a bit of everything in his game. Pace, power, good in front of goal, there is so much to like about the young Frenchman.

Newcastle, will fancy their chances of landing players like this over the summer. However, Dortmund are a huge club, and the lure of replacing Haaland might well appeal to Ekitike.
