Borna Barisic’s imminent Rangers return could cause European headache

Rangers defender Borna Barisic will miss Sunday’s clash away to Hamilton, but supporters will hope he is back in contention by Thursday for a huge Europa League fixture against Spartak Moscow at Ibrox.

Manager Steven Gerrard has confirmed that the left-back is sidelined for the weekend, but is “very close” to being available after withdrawing from the Croatia squad in the international break.

The 25-year-old left-sided flyer has impressed since he joined the Scottish giants in the summer and has chipped in with four assists in just seven games.

His near return could cause a potential selection headache for Gerrard against Spartak Moscow, as he is in a direct battle with Jon Flanagan for the left-back starting position.

The duo have both proven they can fill the role brilliantly for the Light Blues, while Flanagan offers more defensively and Barisic going forward.

Rangers’ upcoming European fixture is a vital one and could go a long way to deciding if they qualify out of the group stages.

They need to try be on the front foot at home and Barisic would be a more attacking option, but Flanagan’s form of late has been solid and axing him could be a tad harsh.
